Physio screening time

Afternoon everyone,

Just letting you know that at the moment, all swimmers should be looking to get a physiotherapy screening. This is a beneficial function that allows the coaches, strength trainer and physios to see a multitude of different things that could ultimately have a large effect on your training. This is something that we do on a 6 monthly basis.

The physios to see are Anthony and Zoe down at Southern Suburbs Physio (http://www.sspc.com.au). They work closely with our swimmers and have made great inroads into becoming an integral part of swimming at Bayside. They have offices in Bentleigh and Parkdale. Each time a swimmer sees them, the coach is notified of what is happening and we can approach things with, ultimately, more knowledge.

All swimmers competing at Nationals will need to see them ASAP. This includes relay swimmers.

Thanks,

Gus

Upcoming meets

Afternoon,

I have had a few requests from people about what events we will be doing this term. They are all listed on the calendar. If you go to the blog (baysideswimming.blogspot.com) and scroll to the bottom, you can view the calendar there. You can shuffle through the months or view as days or weeks. If you click on the event it will bring up all the event info you will need. Any other questions, please let me know.

Nationals Swimmers (potential ones too)
You guys should be taking every opportunity to swim your Nats events. The more in training practice you get, the more prepared you will be before we arrive in Adelaide.

School/State Sprints Swimmers
These swimmers should be racing sprints all the time. This is the term for speed for you guys. Thats not to say that you only do 50s/100s but the emphasis should be on speed.

Juniors
All Junior Competition is an important meet for the club and everyone in the age groups should be swimming them. It is a great exposure for new swimmers and a fun, competitive meet.

Have a good weekend,

Gus

Training Friday and Saturday this week...

... will be at Mentone rather than St Leos as they have an issue with the pool. Same time, different place.

Camp 12 hour swim

Just a bit of info from the camp. We had a 12 hour swim last Thursday. The weather was fantastic. 26 kids got involved. The basics were that in 12 hours (6am to 6pm) each swimmer had to do as many kms as they were comfortable doing. Swimmers could hop out and eat/sleep/drink. Each team (there were 2 teams on camp) would have their total kms added up to see which could go the furthest.
The distance travelled by most of the swimmers was way in excess of anything I imagined. Congratulations to you all.
The Dugongs topped the Great Whites 229.7km to 219.45km in the team comp. Well done.

Some other stats from the day
Gus - 0.8km
Ben - 2km
Vanessa - 0.7km
1.5 litres of sunscreen used
3 meals demolished/swimmer
449.15km in total which was 17966 laps of that pool
Where would 449km get you? Around the bay twice. From Mentone to the South Australian Border. Well past the NSW border. To the north coast of Tassie.

Gear for camp

Bayside Training Camp
Old Mornington Road, Mount Eliza

IMPORTANT: Registrations for a lot of swimmers are incomplete. We are not able to access the lists until it is done. This includes all medical info and payment.

Coaches:
Gus
Vanessa
Happy
Ben

Sessions:
Average 3 sessions a day. Sounds daunting but wont be.

Gear required:

Goggles
Caps
Towels (lots)
Race suits
Training suits
Kit bags
2x tennis balls
Clean shoes for swimming with
Club uniform - photo
Beach gear
Sunscreen
Hat
Drink bottles
Clothes
Gear for running/gym
Mattress protectors
Sleeping bags
Pillows
Toiletries
Medication if required
Museli bars or equivalent for training
Sports drink powder
A big bag to put it all in

If things like phones, ipods, playstations or anything else of value that arent required at the camp are brought, they will be done so at the risk of the owner. I will not be held responsible for loss or theft of unnecessary items. If my kid was going, that sort of valuable gear would not be. At night, any mobile phones brought by swimmers will be turned off and kept safe. This is so swimmers do not spend all night texting and calling and miss out on sleep. Any emergency calls can be made to me on 0405683150 as my phone will be on at all times. Rooms will be a maximum of 2 people/room. Girls and boys will be split in the boarding house. Girls in 1 wing and boys in another.

There will be no ordinary training on whilst the camp is on. The first session back will be Saturday morning

Arrive Tuesday @ 7am
Depart Friday @ 10.30am

Any more queries or questions, please let me know.

Gus

An idea - feedback appreciated

I have had an idea regarding payments made for swimming over the year. I would like your feedback as to how you think it would go and whether it is just a pipe-dream.

If you are a national level swimmer, fees for everything through the year can add up to a lot. So much that it can be hard putting together lump sums for camps, trips etc. The idea is that we work out how much a year for a swimmer will cost, everything bar entries included, and divide that over a year. As an example (values are approximate):
Club Registration - $260
Squad fees - 4x $590
Camp - $700
Nationals - $1300
Uniform - $100
Club Trip (Echuca) - $100
Presentaion night - $40
Xmas Party - $40
Total - $4900

If we were to then divide that total into 4 quarterly payments ($1225) then would that make things easier for parents and payments? Obviously it will be differing amounts for different squads. But it is something that could be applied over the club (given time). This is just an idea and I may have missed some things and gotten costs wrong but it is just for an example. Please reply with your thoughts (and if I have missed anything).

Thanks,

Gus
