State Qualifiers

We have 64 people qualified for State Champs so far. We will likely have more than that with relay only swimmers. Great job people. There are a few people still chasing this weekend at a couple of meets.

Reminder that entries are due in December 7th at 5pm for online entries. I can't do it for you. It has to be done online. Let me know if you need help. Get them done now if you can. Don't worry about relays. That is mine to enter.

Thanks,

Lessons learned

This weekend, especially today (Sunday) was a bit of an eye opener for some swimmers at Decembers.

The biggest lesson most people will have come away with is how vastly important it is to stay warm if not hot prior to a race. It was slightly chilly and a few swimmers got really cold and performances were indicative of this. People diving into the water and physically not being able to get going until it was too late.

I have often pointed this out and will again now. We live in Melbourne. We train primarily indoors in warm environments. The pool that State Champs will be in is outside and sometimes the air is cold. It is a little foreign to us when this happens. PREPARE. Ugg boots, deck coats, hoodies, trackies, gloves, beanies, etc.

It was 15deg c out there today and in many cases, hoodies and thongs were no where near enough for the conditions.

I can only assume that deck coat sale this month will be high. I will certainly be taking mine next week.

Well done to those who swam this weekend too. There were some awesome times. See you at the pool,

More State Stuff

I had a meeting with Anthony from SSPC this morning and they will be on hand for any assistance that swimmers need at State in December. Remember that it is for the swimmers only. Put that sore back away, Mum.

The way it works will be on a priority system meaning that swimers leading into finals etc will get priority but all swimmers will be serviced in time. They will be there from 10.30 to the end of the morning session and likely at the beginning of the evening session. This is the first time we have run this and will appreciate your patience while we work out the best system for the most efficient way of running.

Also, we will have a mailing list where everyone going to state will be emailed or texted (havent decided yet) after each heat session about the upcoming finals session.

For this to work, the swimmers will have to be organised and efficient.

Thanks,

Gus

Freak

State LC - Dec '10

Morning Everyone,

I thought I would write and let you know how we are travelling towards LC State this year.

Entries
Must be done online. They are open now for those organised enough to get them in. If you go a faster time for an event you have already entered, the fastest toime will be the one counted. This is the link to the online entries https://www.clubsonline.com.au/swimregform/index.cfm?fuseaction=display_meet_summary&MeetID=9081&OrgID=2090 you will need your login details for this. If you do not have the login, please call Swim Vic on 96865222. The online entries will be due to Swim Vic by the last day of Decembers (Dec 5) so get them in.

Relays
Are selected by the coaches. They are also entered by the coaches. When doing online entries, do not worry about relays. They are being done. Additionally, the club picks up the bill for relays. Relay only swimmers will however, have to purchase a swimmers pass. I think it is around $15-$20. The basis around relays is that the team that we consider to be the fastest will be the one selected.
If you think you need a faster time to get into a relay, I will take timetrials at Waves on Thursday mornings in the last 15 mins. Please let me know if you intend to take up the offer and no, I will not let you know the time that will need to get you into the team.

After State Dinner
Will be on the last night. It is EXPECTED that all swimmers and at least 1 parent will be there. The social committee are doing a lot of work to get this night going and it will be a very positive night for all the state qualifiers.

Uniform
Is red. Everyone will wear red. Parents, please wear red. It will have an enormously positive effect if we can all get out there in the 'sea of red.' If you want official Bayside gear, please see Michelle Balleggi who can get it sorted if we have anything left in stock. RED! If you need caps, we have plenty. No old caps either please. Just the new ones. Importantly, this is Melbourne. It does get cold from time to time. A warm up is called that so that you can get warm and stay that way til you race. If you are cold, you will not race to your potential. STAY WARM. Wear hoodies, deck coats, uggies etc. Equally, if it is a hot day, leave that gear in the car. It will eventually cool down. If you get a medal, we will be wearing red Bayside t-shirts and hoodies on the dias.

Finals
Are awesome. They are also a bit sad when no-one is there to support you. I would love to see swimmers and families not involved in the finals come out to support those that are. ESPECIALLY the relays.

Diet
Is all important. Start practicing your race diet now. I know it can be tiresome always eating the same thing for 6 stright days but it will do you well. And if you sneak some lollies or icecream or hot chips or something similar, know that I too will know...

That is all for now. I am sure there will be more emails.

Kyabram Meet results

A little late, my appologies, but here they are. The results for the meet.

FYI - If there are spelling mistakes on here then it is likely that this will be the name put on the national database. If there is, please let me know, and for any future or past meets. The database works off the swimmers name and DOB. Incorrect spelling will result in a duplicate name in the database and any PBs will not be accessible.

Thanks,

Gus

Learn to swim research

ELEANOR HALL: A group of Queensland researchers is investigating whether swimming makes children smarter.

The landmark study will monitor thousands of children who learn how to swim early and whether that translates into higher scores in the classroom.

High-profile swimming coach Lawrie Lawrence approached the university to start the study.

He wants to prove that swimming does help children learn in order to encourage the Federal Government to subsidise swimming lessons, as Stephanie Smail reports.

STEPHANIE SMAIL: Swimming coach Lawrie Lawrence has been teaching children how to swim for 35 years.

LAWRIE LAWRENCE: Babies come into this world with billions of neurons and they need stimulation because that's how they learn. They learn by sight, sound, taste, touch, smell.

Now water is the perfect medium to stimulate the senses because as you immerse a baby in the water it covers their whole body and as you move the children through the water they experience different sensations. Plus the parents are there to communicate and talk so it's the perfect medium.

STEPHANIE SMAIL: Lawrie Lawrence and others in the swimming industry approached Professor Robyn Jorgensen at Griffith University to find evidence that teaching babies and young children how to swim, can help them develop intellectually.

Professor Jorgensen says there's already promising signs.

ROBYN JORGENSEN: The thing that's already striking us is that with swimming it's the first time they're faced with formal instructions. So they're already being exposed to the kind of things that we do in school where we ask the child to sit down, look at me, listen to my instructions, do what I've told them to do.

So it's happening much earlier than say if the kids go to gymnastics they already have to be able to walk and tumble and things like that, whereas in swimming it's tailored for their physical development.

STEPHANIE SMAIL: The research team will study 10,000 children across Australia, New Zealand and the United States for the next four years, interviewing parents and observing children in the classroom.

Lawrie Lawrence says the four-year-olds he's teaching in Brisbane this morning are the perfect example of how swimming lessons aid a child's development.

LAWRIE LAWRENCE: They're starting to recognise colours, numbers, they're starting to experience social interaction with other kids. As they achieve skills they get a great feeling of self esteem so they become more confident.

STEPHANIE SMAIL: The swimming coach says the study could be proof he needs to convince the Federal Government to pay for swimming lessons for families who can't afford them.

LAWRIE LAWRENCE: Many people and the lower socio-economic people cannot afford swimming lessons. In fact, if we can prove that swimming lessons enhance children's social, emotional, physical and intellectual capital - if we can prove that, we can go to the Federal Government and say listen, here it is from Griffith University.

This is a four-year longitudinal study of kids who have learnt to swim at an early age. We believe this should be available to every Australian child.

STEPHANIE SMAIL: Professor Robyn Jorgensen says swimming lessons are shaping up as a valuable addition to a child's early education.

ROBYN JORGENSEN: We're already seeing that the early swimming is actually a fun environment where the children are not threatened but they're being exposed to what they need to know in terms of school preparation.

We believe that aside from the swimming showing that the students are likely to be enhanced in their development that it's also a very good way for preparing students for school.

ELEANOR HALL: Griffith University Professor Robyn Jorgensen ending Stephanie Smail's report.

Ben Anderson competed in the Noosa Triathlon on the weekend and placed 9th in the 15-19 years age group. Considering that he is 15 and that this is a very well attended event it was a great result. Well done Ben.

Melbourne Cup morning swim

Morning Everyone,

Here are the results of the mornings swim. It was a very successful morning. We had lots of swimmers from all of our pools come along and swim either a 3.2km, 2km or 1km pool swim. The most challenging part for some being counting the laps. We had a lot of assistance from the parents, none more than Darren Jeffs who put together breakfast for everyone. Thanks to all those that helped including the coaches who gave up their time on a public holiday. I hope everyone has a wonderful day and we are all back to work tomorrow.
