Screening Sheet

I have printed out a load of screening sheets and they are in the office at Mentone.
EVERY swimmer in the top 2 squads MUST have this sheet filled in by a PHYSIO and brought back and handed to their coach.
These are used as pre-hab and re-hab documents. That is, they are used to try and find issues before they arise and treat issues that have already arisen. We also use them for planning strength programs for the swimmers.
These are very important for swimmers and vital to coaches.
If you already use a physio, feel free to use them. We also have a physio that deals with a lot of our swimmers.
Justin McEvoy - 9397 4977 - Williamstown though
More local is fine though

Goal Sheet

This is an example of a goal sheet to be used.

The first section is about your organisation for the week. What you are doing and when.
The second section is a statement of your short and long term goals. What they are.
The last section is the tough one, processes. This is what you have to do to get your goals. The number of goals is just a guide. Add more if you like.

IMPORTANT - This not only a swimming goal sheet. This is to be used for all of your activities. Your coach will want to know what your priorities are and it is an indication of which way the swimmers and coaches will go with training.

Goals are to be
Specific - an actual time or place or something that you know that you have acheived. Train hard is not one.
Measureable - time, place, final, something.
Acheivable - although they can be ambitious, they must be acheivable.
Realistic - nothing outside the realms of possibility.
Time constrained - must be in a certain time period. State it and stick to it.

Meets for winter

There are more meets coming online in the calendar section of www.swimmingvictoria.org.au but they are not all there by any means. Stay close to the calendar for more info.

State Open Champs

There are very limited opportunities to qualify for State Opens this year as it is very soon. Those who have qualified and are happy with their entry times, no problems but if you are going to have to chase times, you will need to start entering some meets and soon.

I am told electronic entries will be the way to go for all State run events from now on.

Apology

I want to apologise to the people who were put off by what I said to them this morning.

It was not mean't to be a challenge or in any way something to make life more difficult for parents. On the contrary, it was something intended to make things better for the swimming team.

If I have not thought this out enough and it impacts on peoples lives to an extent of being intrusive and inconvenient, I am sorry and it was not my original intention.

The basis for my statement was fairly simple. If we have less people on the deck and around the pool, it is less of a distraction for both swimmers and coaches. And yes, coaches can feel intimidated at times. It is a fairly common principle throughout swim clubs, especially in Australia, that training sessions for squad swimmers are closed. More than once I have sat in instructional lectures and been told about the clarity a squad gets when the distractions have been removed.
This standard has been the case at all the clubs I have coached at and I never had any response that it was an inconvenience. I never looked at it as potentially being an inconvenience for people. Going back to the days that I swam, my parents were told to wait at the door too.

I also encourage anyone that feels like I need to hear something, to please call me. Irrespective of whom else you call, I will have to deal with it eventually. One parent came straight to me this morning and I appreciate the honesty and forthrightness. If thats a word.

Once again, my apologgies and I hope I have not upset too many people,

Gus

Goals

Time to start thinking about goals, swimmers.
Sometime in the next few weeks your coach will ask you to fill in a sheet stating your goals. Both long and short, swimming and otherwise. If you need help, ask. This is a fundamental part of what we do as sports people. Set a goal and go out and get it.

Other things to look forward to soon are food diaries, dietitians and sport psychs. You need them and we are bringing them to you.

Lastly, there will be an increasing awareness of accountability sneaking in soon. In all areas of swimming, swimmers and others.

Kiwi 200 back

Had a great start. Way better than this morning. Struggled a bit when it came to the 3rd 50 but still went well. Finished up a little slower than this morning and came in 8th.

Swimming is all done now for Bayside. Been a solid week with the standard set of swims. Some good, some great and some that aren't either. Had some surprises too. A great week of well behaved boys. Looking forward to next year already. Cmon girls, step up an join the boys.

Not sure what to do for the next 2 hours til the bowling starts. Plenty of girls around for the boys to talk to. No more entries from me today. Maybe some photos from bowling- if you are lucky.

4th for James

A strong swim from a tired swimmer. James was very happy with his swim. 2nd at the 50, 1st at the 100 and 5th at the 150. A great week for a very capable swimmer. Again, looking forward to next year.

Only Kiwi to go. More to come.

Late again

Sorry people.
James had a cruisy swim into the final of 200 IM. Looking good for the final.
T-man and Joel both did PBs in their 200 frees. Good swims to finish off their meet.
Kiwi-bro did a small PB in the 200 back but didn't really go for it at the start. Got 11th but 2 guys pulled the pin so he is in 0 for the final.
Nik Morris (yes there are 4 Ni(c)(k)s on this trip) swam his 100 fly and learned a lot about national competition. Unfortunately he left a bit early and got DQd.
James did his 100 fly and looked awesome. The time was a little outside his best and he finished 12th.
Luke was super pumped for his 200 breast. He went out well but tired quickly and locked up. It's very tough if you lock up in breast as all of you is in the water all the time. His time was no where near reflective of the effort applied and he will learn a lot from it.

Two finals tonight with James in the 200 IM, Kiwi in 200 back and then we are off to ten pin bowling.

See you tonight.

Medallist

- Gus

Location:Olympic Blvd,Homebush Bay,Australia

Another medal!

Our 14 years relay team scored another medal tonight. They picked up a bronze in the 200 free relay. Great swimming and awesome splits.
The b team had a great swim in the earlier heat too. All 4 of them going under 28. That means we now have 8 14/u boys going sub 28sec for 50 free. Pretty good.
Nothing shows depth in a club like a couple of relay medals at age.

Young'ns

A bit late...

Sorry,
Forgot to update all you kidies out there on what happened today.

Joel had pretty strong swim in his 100 back. A couple of mistakes but strong.
James did his 200 free. A lot of effort but dropped his technique a bit.
Andy swam a great 100 fly. First 50 could have been a bit quicker but the last 50 was a cracker.
Capo and Nick Dawes had their 50 free swims and both did really well.
Andy then had another swim with his 200 IM. Strong swim and just a little outside his PB.

We have a few relays tonight. Keep in touch.

MENS 200 back

Apparently they are both men now. So they tell me.

Jadyn worked hard for his swim this morning. A bit like his 100 we are working through a few changes to some aspects of his swim. No lack of effort but it just did not go his way time wise. Look out short course.

David had a cracker of a swim coming in in a PB. It took him up a few places to 12th. Second reserve tonight. Great job.

More to come.

Great night concludes

T-man went out hard and gave the 400 a good shake. He finished up 9th. He was a bit down about it but he is wrong. It was a great swim.

James then had his second swim for the night and had a massive crack at the 400IM. Came in 5th in a new PB.

Then came the big improver for the day. Capo swam his 100 free and came in tenth. Fastest 12 year old in Australia. Along the way today he has learnt some lessons he won't soon forget. Look for big improvements next year.

See you tomorrow.

Best morning so far

After the first 2 events we have had some great swims.

T-man ripped up the 400 and is 7th. Joel had a tough swim and is 11th.

James then cruised into the 400 IM final for tonight.

Nick Dawes had a solid swim in the 100 free to go a small PB. Capo then came out and ripped up his 100 free to go into the final 10th.

Luke Verma then had a great swim and did a 2 sec PB in his 100 breast.

Great morning. Let's make it a great night.

Jimbob had a good swim in his 100 fly. Lost his legs a bit toward the end.
Both the Nettlefolds are through to the final in 100 back. Adam is 2nd and James is 7th.

Half way through the big day

The wash up from this morning as follows.
Kiwi and Andy both had strong showings in the 100 back. Couple of small mistakes but good swims.
Joel and Ben swam PBs in their 100 frees.
James had a good PB on his 50 free.

All 3 relays ready to go tonight. They start around 8.

Big day

Today is a big one.
Andy and Kiwi grace the pool in their 100 backs. That's followed by Ando and Joel battling away in the 100 free. Then last swim this morning is James in his 50 free.
Doesn't seem thy big til you see that we have 3 relay teams swimming tonight in the finals. 14/u medley A and B teams then the 16s free team.

Big day. Let get into it.

Tonights finals.

2 great swims tonight.
Joel had a strong swim to take 8th in the 200 back in a PB.
Tyler then backed up after a day of rollercoaster emotions to do his second best time in the 1500.

Day 2

A fairly emotional day for some swimmers today.

James had his 100 free and started well then didn't finish as well as he would have liked. Ended up 14th.

Joel and Tyler both had their 200 backs an both swam well. Tyler had a pretty anxious morning and burnt a lot of energy. He had to dig deep to swim well. Joel had a pretty goo swim and will be 8th going into the final tonight.

Jayden and David had great swims in the 100 back. David went under the minute for the first time and Jayden had a great looking swim.

Andrew swam just outside a PB for his 50 free. Great start. Head started to fade a bit toward the end though. Was touched out toward the end.

Finalists tonight are Joel in the 200 back and Tyler in the 1500. See you then.
