As one season ends...
You will find the State Age events listing and qualifying times. Remember please, no longer are you able to convert times. You also are unable to use short course times for long course meets. If you also consider that you are unable to use times older than 12 months, it adds up that you can only use times from December 17 2009 onwards for State times.
That being said, as State starts on December 17, we only have a few months to get some good training and racing done.
- 19 Sept - Bayside meet - MSAC - online entries. Enter everything. Race as hard as you can. We need to get used to doing multiple events in a day WELL.
- 27 Sept to 2 Oct - Thredbo camp - get info and payment back to me now. Hard work plus fun.
- 16 to 17 Oct - State Open Water Championships - Hazelwood Pondage. A great chance to get to know Open Water swimming. Enter the 5k. Or 10k if you dare.
- 23 to 24 Oct - Kyabram meet in Echuca - get in touch with Andrew Happy Hammond for more info. This will be our club country trip for the year. We want swimmers to race their OFF events. That means butterflyers doing breaststroke. A fun meet. Email your entries to your coach.
- 20 Nov - Geelong Open - Kardinia Pool - its an outside pool and a good meet. A good opportunity to get outside our comfort zone (MSAC). Perhaps get some much needed vitamin D. Race main events plus a couple of ones you like.
- 27 to 28 Nov and 4 to 5 Dec - December Competition - MSAC - last chance for state Qual times. Will be last chance to race prior to state. If you have all of your times, race your main events. Try to stick to 1 or 2 swims/session. No more. You should be swimming fast here.
- 17 to 22 Dec - State Age - 6 days of fun filled hard racing and chance to show how good we really are. There will be a big emphasis on getting good results in relays and qualifying them for Age Nationals.
From January 1 onwards, there may be some divided focus within the training program. There will be people preparing for National Open/Age meets in April. There will be people chasing qualifying times for Nationals. There will also be those focused on school swim meets. Those with a focus on school meets will have a majority sprint focus across all strokes. All that being said, this will be the racing schedule.
- 14 to 16 Jan - State Open - MSAC - Will be likely using this for Open swimmers and Age swimmers chasing times. Also looking at using for relay QTs for Nationals.
- Your school meets. Really use these meets to swim fast. You may not be able to use the times but you will know what you are capable of.
- 11 to 13 Feb - NSW State Open - SOPAC - I will be taking a group of swimmers up there. Anyone interested let me know. QTs are tough and on the NSW Swimming website.
- 19 to 20 Feb - Australian Open Water Champs - Sydney International Rowing Centre - only for those qualified. 5km and 10km.
- 20 Feb - All Junior heats - MSAC - all swimmers aged 14/under should enter this sprint meet to practise for school meets and hopefully progress to the finals weekend.
- 13 March - District Swim Champs - MSAC - just another days racing...
- 19 to 20 and 26 to 27 March - will let you know which meets to enter this weekend. These meets will be used as really hard racing weekends. Enter lots of events. Race hard and race tired. Training will not be easy in this time either. Aimed primarily at national swimmers. Good for anyone though.
- 1 to 8 April - Australian Open Champs - SOPAC - For those that qualify.
- 18 to 23 April - Australian Age Champs - Adelaide - For those that qualify.

Rules for competition
Suits - Only allowed to wear ONE. None others. If you have a suit that is of the racing variety, it needs to have a FINA logo stamped on the left rear waistline. If it just a normal suit, no stress (yet).
No strapping tape - unless accompanied PRIOR TO THE EVENT by a doctors certificate and that the officials don't deem that it will give you an advantage.
Training
Those not swimming at state will have the same but they WILL have a session at St Leonards on Friday afternoon at 4.30pm.
This is for swimmers in 8 and 6 squads.
Stranger things have happened
Last year, as some may remember, a swimmer kicked a hole in the wall of the boom and they stopped swimming for 30 mins. When they recommenced, they did not use that lane and all the people due to swim in those lanes were put into a heat by themselves.
Expect anything.
When Michael Phelps was 16 (already an Olympian) Bob Bowman, his coach, decided he was getting a bit cocky and that everything was going his way a little too often. At a meet (a small meet, Nationals) Michael left his goggles on the ground. Bob saw them there and stomped on them. When Michael came to get his gear prior to the race, he saw his goggles and instantly panicked. Bob asked him how he was going to get around this little issue. Michael didn't wear any for the race.
That story is especially relevant as in Beijing, swimming the 200 fly, Michael's goggles filled up at the start of the race. Without panicking, he swam the race and stuck to the plan. If you remember, he got gold in every swim...

New Timeline
Make sure you are well aware of the time your race is ESTIMATED to begin. It is only an estimate. Be there, in the pool are 90 mins prior to the race you are swimming. That way there is a buffer of time to counter any unexpected circumstances.
Take into account the traffic changes on Sunday too. They are all important to getting to the pool on time. There is a prior email with more detail.

Passes for State...
They are necessary for competitors to gain access to the pool deck to swim. If you do not have a pass, you cannot get down the stairs. Make sure you guard yours with your life and try not to misplace it. They are expensive to replace.
The only people with access to the pool deck are officials, swimmers and coaches. Anyone else on pool deck potentially puts the club in a position where we can be penalised.

State Qualifiers
This will be an informal occasion so that we can all know and appreciate what each swimmer has as their challenge for the weekend.
Additionally, everyone that has qualified for state, your training sessions will be a little different this week. I would like everyone to swim only once a day and those sessions to be
Monday PM - At St Leonards
Tuesday AM - At Mentone
Wednesday PM - At St Leonards
Thursday AM - at Waves
Friday NONE - because you are swimming that night.
This meet is a different format this year. Keep your wits about you. Some events are straight finals, some are heats and finals. Some are fastest heat in finals. Know where and when you need to be. If you do not know, ASK. Better to know than muck it up.
Food - make sure you bring plenty of good food and drink. Make it really good, healthy food. If a coach sees anyone, whether they have finished swimming or not, eating gross, fatty food (esp. from the kiosk) words will be had. It isn't fair for those still swimming. Lollies aren't needed. You are VASTLY better off eating fruit. Don't go overboard on the sports drinks. They won't make you swim faster.
Every time I see a swimmer, they should be doing one of the following - warming up, racing, swimming down, drinking water, talking to their coach or smiling.
Make sure that ALL swimmers see their coaches BEFORE and AFTER every single swim. It is vital. It is likely that the coaches may not be with the Bayside group, due to the format and setup. Be aware of where you need to go.
Lastly, we need to get a LOT of seats. The more people we get in the door as early as possible, the better. We have the 5th biggest team. 58 swimmers. That means if each swimmer turns up with one parent, we will need 116 seats at the least. Help each other and reserve a whole lot of seats.
Swim fast, enjoy and don't be scared. It is only swimming.

Engine Wingskin Flyer
I also have an unused mens size 26 pair that I bought a few weeks ago for someone who didn't need it. Same price.Let me know.
Important information is that when fitting these suits, especially at the leg, that you should not be able to fit 2 fingers between the cuff and your skin. They need to be that tight and yes, they will be uncomfortable. That being said, you should only put them on just prior to racing and take them off straight after, before you swim down. If you look after them, your suits will last a lot longer.

Updated address
As of now, it would be preferred that all physiotherapy needs be looked after by SSPC.
As a club we need to become more professional and organised and this is a significant step forward in that area. Anthony and Zoe have had vast amounts of experience in many areas of physiotherapy and are now part of the Bayside Team. When you are seen for and injury/screening/check up, the results are then put into an email that is sent to your swimming coach and strength and conditioning coach. This way, we are all aware of what is going on. Twice this week already I have had email reports from physios. It is a great system.

Tanya at Worlds
She will be swimming in 100 BR (day 2, 16 August), 50 FLY (day 6, 20/8), 100 FR (day 5, 19/8) and 50 FR (day 3, 17/8) plus likely relays. The competition starts on August 15 and continues to August 21. The heats start at 9am (5pm our time) and the finals start at 5pm (1am). I know what you are all thinking, she will miss out on voting. Apparently there have been postal votes sorted out.
Joking aside, this is a colossal effort. There are many people out there that admire Tanya's efforts from afar and now its time to let her know.
When I was a kid, there were things called Herograms that you could send to your favourite Olympians/Commonwealth Gamesians/World Championshipers. I would like to start that here in our little club too. I would like everyone out there to write to Tanya and wish her well. I am sure that all swimmers out there at Bayside would love to wish her well in an email.Tanya's address is tans53@hotmail.com and I am positive that she will appreciate every one of the emails.
I will be trying to sort out updates for everyone as they happen but I think the best place for results will likely be www.wcswimming2010.com which is the official website. I hope that they have a live results website up and going by the time the comp starts. Can't find anything yet though.
Thanks,
Gus
Coaches, can you forward this to your swimmers please?
