Tuesday morning

Another reminder that Tuesday morning is back at Mentone again. Thanks.

Why is it so?

Last Wednesday morning we had a great roll up of 58 swimmers. We got a lot of skills work done. A bit of fun too.

Here is the question. Why am I standing here on a Monday morning looking at 20 swimmers? Everyone knows it will likely be a tough set. Always is on Monday morning. We also ALL know that there is work that needs doing in winter. Turning up solely to skills and afternoon sprint sessions will not be enough.

All those swimmers with goals that some have discussed with me. Here are you? Do you really want it?

I look forward to seeing you all next Monday morning.

Encouragent meet

A big thanks to all those that helped out last night at st leonards. It was a huge turn out and most importantly, people were here with big smiles on their faces. This sort of meet goes a long way to the growth of a stable club.

Again, thankyou and well done.

Entries

Just a reminder,

entries for CA Tritons, Surrey Park and Firbank are to be emailed to your coach. It is likely that it will apply for Nunawadings meet too. A cheque is then to be written to Bayside Swimming for the total amount. All we need is the event number, name of swimmer and the money for the entries.

Bayside will enter the swimmers and pay the entries. This way, no one falls through the gap.

Encouragement Meets 2010

These are the Encouragement Meets we will be going to this year.

The Bayside one this week.
Haileybury on June 26 at Haileybury
Oasis Otters on 2 October at Dandenong Oasis
Kyabram on 24 October at Echuca (club trip weekend)

Please see your coach for more details and check the www.swimmingvictoria.org.au site in the calendar section for specifics.

Winter Meet Schedule

Here are the meets that we will be sending coaches to and ones that EVERYONE should be attending. They are primarily qualifying meets for State Age. Courtest of the fact that State Open is so early, it is a little unrealistic to expect too much there. If people dont wish to swim Opens, I don't mind. EVERYONE of the age group swimmers should be aiming to qualify for State Age (27-29 August).

Surrey Park - Morning Session (+1500 and 800 in arvo sess)- 13 June - MSAC
CA Tritons - Morning Session (+400FR and 400IM in arvo sess) - 27 June - MSAC
Firbank Aquastars - 15/over morning, 14/under afternoon - 24 July - MSAC
Nunawading - All day - 14 August - MSAC
Kyabram - All weekend - 24 October - Echuca (club team trip)

If you wish to do more meets than this, please feel free. I dont want people racing every weekend but more often than this is OK. If you arent able to swim at one of these meets then please, make it up with another. You will note that on most of the meets we will only be there for half a day. I dont want people sitting around all day when it isnt needed. Get in, swim a few races, get out.

All of the info for these meets is on www.swimmingvictoria.org.au

Encouragement meet Friday night

Just a reminder that the swimming clubs encouragent meet is this Friday.

We will need to have quite a few senior swimmers commit to helping on the night. It will be a good night that raises good awareness for the club. We think that it will be finishing around 8pm.

Thanks

How a Champion Swimmer Thinks - Mind Training Tips for Swimmers
What goes through a champion swimmer's mind before and during a race, compared to a regular swimmer? When two swimmers are at the same level of skill, talent and experience, this is what will separate the two at the end of the race.
Thought processes are regarded as so powerful nowadays that it is considered that one mind can influence another - e.g. if an excellent swimmer 'hangs around' with a champion for long enough, they will eventually take on that swimmer's habits, training methods, thought processes and behavior, which should eventually bring similar-type results! Great swimmers seem to possess an almost innate ability to handle pressure, control doubt and negative thoughts, and come through when the chips are down. Some of these skills are inborn; often, however, these skills are learned along the way.

These are the attributes most swimmers desire - those intangible qualities that make a true champion. Kieren Perkins was up against huge odds after a bad heat swim in the 1500m at the Atlanta Olympics. He struggled with major nagging doubts and incessant negative thoughts during the 24 hours before the final, so he opted to read a book constantly during this period to cleanse his mind of the nagging doubts. This was a clever piece of innovation, because reading the book prevented any negative thoughts to enter his mind during this crucial period, and kept his mind and body relatively loose and relaxed for the race.

We can learn from this type of strategy. Whenever you feel you are getting 'tied up in knots' from nervousness, providing a distraction can be a clever idea to divert your mind from feeling the pressure. This could include a wide range of possibilities depending on how much time you have - such as a reading a book, simply going outside and having a break from the race atmosphere, listening to some music with headphones (a popular choice), talking or laughing with friends, a computer game, or doing some relaxation exercises such as meditation or visualization.

Distracting yourself from nervousness can simply but effectively re-focus your mind upon something else, taking the focus off the future race and reducing stress (it's amazing how many people actually get nervous about being nervous!) Try this whenever you can feel the physical symptoms of nerves or negative thoughts beginning to bother you.

Perkins also provided an insight to his mental preparation for that Olympic final, and about his thoughts during the race itself. To quote the newspaper article, he said "I visualized exactly what was going to happen tonight" he said. "It's hard to explain, but when you are focused you almost have no thought. Sitting behind the blocks I was 100 per cent focused and I didn't have a single thing in my mind. I knew what I had to do and it was just a matter of letting my instincts take over".

The two techniques Kieren mentioned have been recently discussed in past tips - the enormous benefit of visualizing the perfect swim in your mind, and also getting into the mental state known as 'the zone' by clearing the mind of all thought and simply allowing the body to operate on pure instinct. These are the practices of champions, and they are powerful techniques which work. It's a good idea to master this first in training, in addition to the conscious training sets where you are concentrating on something specific.

One of the ways to becoming a champion is to copy their habits, and find out which ones work best for you. Begin watching and learning from the champions, they are living proof of what may work for you.

Milestone!!!!!!

Forgot to mention it yesterday!

Thursday morning at waves.

First session ever ( in the time I have been here ).

Wait for it...

... that no one got out mid session to go to the toilet.

May not seem like much. May be a while til it happens again.

Makes a massive difference to the quality of the work, across the whole pool.

Let's make this the standard, not the exception.

Just to be clear, this is being written mid Friday morning session. 2 have gone already, 1 asked, the other snuck and thinks they got away with it...

Live from the pool...

Just to set some minds at ease, a recovery session isn't supposed to be easy. Recovery sessions aren't the easiest session you will do. Technique sessions are easier, but they won't do much to aid your recovery. A technique session needs to cycle between fast and slow and is also benefitted by multiple strokes.

Here's th kicker, you shouldn't get out of a recovery session feeling recovered. You should, however, feel better the next session than you would have if it was all just easy.

Here endeth the lesson.

Books

Like all holidays, I read a couple of books while I was away.

The best was 18 Hours. The story of Jock Wallace. Jock was an Ausralian SAS soldier when war came to Afganistan.

It tells the story of 18 hours of Jocks life where he was pinned down in enemy territory with a few American soldiers and another Aussie. Great and very easy read. Gives a good insight into what it's like to be a soldier today. Warning- there is a fair bit of blue language in it. If you can handle that, then it's a good read. I sat in the sun in BA and read it in a day.

There is a section where a Spectre gunship is talked about. We have a suspicion that it was piloted by my wife's uncle. He can't tell us it was him. He can't tell us it wasn't either...

Tanya

For those living under a rock for the last few months, Tanya has made the World Championships team to go to Eindhoven this year.

A great achievement, no one will doubt.

I thought that I might let you in on a little of the preparation that will go into her swimming this year.

From AUS and VIC swimming
Funding will come from Vic swimming through the VIS.
Autralian swimming has had a big influence in the planning of the season. Tanya had a camp in Sydney for a week in April. She will be competing at German Nationals in Berlin soon. Then there is the trip to Eindhoven, 3 weeks long with full support staff. A huge part of Swimming Australia's budget goes to tours and training camps.

From Bayside
Individualised program due to Tanyas meets being offset from everyone elses. Not such an issue now but it will gradually get more distinct the closer we get to comps.
Support in as many different ways as we need to show it. We are the face to face of Tanyas training. 99% of the message will be coming from us. We need to have the answers.
All of her sessions are already written between now and World Champs. Took a while. That said, it might all get thrown out the window if it isnt working. Part of the process.

From Tanyas Employer
Understanding. Simple as that. And she also needs time. Time to do her work in. Time off from work. In these situations the relationship between employers and employees can become strained.

It should also be mentioned that Tanya is an adult. A lot of times, coaches can turn around and talk to adult swimmers that same way they would a younger athlete. There is a different approach required and it can be tricky at times. This is a great experience. First time for her and first time for me. Organisation is our best friend. Stay tuned. more to come.

Goals

Havent had many people talk to me about goals. No one has handed in a sheet yet. Due now, people.

Winter - Brrrr

Morning all,

I know I have been back for a few days and it has taken me until now to get back onto the blog.

I thought that the first spiel of the season should be about how short course season works and what is involved.

SC (short course) is different to long course. Apart from the shorter pool. It tends to be the season that things get sorted out. Fitness is the big one. Technique comes a pretty close second. Other things include race plans, mental prep and very importantly, getting your personal management sorted out. All of this will set you in good stead for the upcoming LC season.

Many people enjoy the SC season and in many ways, it is a lot more enjoyable than LC due to a lack of perceived 'pressure.' My intention will be to try and bring the enjoyment into swimming more and then carry it through to the LC season. Trying to remove the pressure from the shoulders of an elite swimmer can be a very tough ask. Enjoying swimming can go a long way toward doing just that.

So, to summarise, SC is all about getting fit, organised and fun. Great prep for LC.
